Believe it or not, it’s not always about the money.

Business environments these days have dramatically changed from five years ago. Employees are now leaving their jobs much earlier. In the last half a decade, employees are staying in their jobs at an average of 3 to 5 years, which is not even enough time to contribute and make an impact in the business. This had led to management looking for ways to keep their best employees from leaving their workplaces. There is a financial burden to frequent recruiting. See Attention HR Executives

January is the month that most people are looking to make the move from one job to another. Job searches last year were skyrocketing in December of 2012.

Product Safety – Why It Matters

There are an array of federal and state regulations regarding product safety, especially children’s products, that carry serious consequences for non-compliance.

The job market is improving and it is great for everyone, almost.

A recent study says that almost 25% of HR professionals are worried about keeping their employees engaged while the job market gets brighter. Many are trying to attract good employees but more importantly, they need to understand how to keep existing good employees. It’s all about retention
For the last few years, loyalty has been in decline. Many companies did not understand the importance of expressing their appreciation for their employees and they are experiencing high turnover rates. High turnover costs money in lost production, finding and training new staff and then repeating the cycle.
We help companies in need of pursuing ways to keep employees motivated and re-energized.

By creating appreciation programs for your company to reward individuals, teams and designing incentive programs to reward everyone when a company goal is met, everyone wins! Give us a call at 734-439-0354, we might be able to help you take your frustration of losing key employees to a win-win situation.

Retention of key employees is typically top of mind for most HR professionals. If you are experiencing high turnover or even thinking that you could lose some of your most prized personnel, watch for next week’s blog to learn the 5 reasons why employees leave.

Some areas to work towards helping protect your company from losing $$ and key staff might be job fairs, new employee gifts, birthday and holiday gifts, open enrollment efforts, staff outings and award programs.

Recently, companies that want to stay in the game are taking a hands-on approach to employee retention programs. They are making a big deal and congratulating and recognizing them for their hard work or out of the box thinking and their contributions to the company which boils down to the company bottom line.

Here’s a thought. Have a quarterly awards program for an Employee Attendance Recognition program. The employee can choose gifts that appeal to them. These gifts can also be branded with the company logo, promoting the company even more outside of the workplace.

How about comment cards, they have been used for years. When a customer fills out a rating card and gives an employee a good review. The employee gets a bag filled with useful branded items and every month the contents of the bag change. If the contents are desirable and no one knows what they might get, there could be more competition for each individual to strive for this month’s bag of recognition. Take it one step further, have an overall competition at the end of the year for the monthly winners.

Safety programs: Again think monthly or quarterly, yet at the end of the year if the goal of going accident-free for the year is met, then everyone in the company/plant/division gets something with a high perceived value. Rewarding and recognizing the whole team for their efforts all year long.

AWAKENING THE ZOMBIES: LIFE OR DEATH AT YOUR TRADESHOW

Ever get the feeling that everyone you see at tradeshows and conferences lately looks like a mindless zombie ? You’ve seen the Zombies….the ones with that glazed look in their eyes from stimuli overload, wandering aimlessly down the aisle, or staring into space while sitting next to you at a seminar, never making eye contact.

We put together a few tips to help you bring those Zombies back ALIVE or at least DYING to stop in your booth.

Develop an ambience utilizing one or more of the 5 Senses – Visual, Sound, Smell, Taste and Touch – Each sense can be integrated into your trade show space in order to stimulate attendees. Think about it, typically much of the trade show floor is decorated with the ‘safe’ corporate colors – black, grey, beige. You might see a touch of red here and there but if you want to create a distinction for your brand, take advantage of the eye’s strong attraction for color when designing your space. What’s that you say, your display has already been created, think about adding things like florals that will pop with color and fragrance. Along with visual, think audio and audio can be incorporated through many mediums with today’s technology. Motion can come in the form of a demonstration, bold videos playing in the background or a sound related concept. The same holds true for smell. If you’re are launching a new product that has an orange scent, consider using promotional items that can incorporate that scent, like note paper, scented pens or pencils or other promotional items. We’ve even had clients use scratch and sniff items. The Zombies are easily attracted to items that stimulate their tactile sensory brain cells too. Try to come up with ideas to create ways that allows the attendees to touch items that tie in with your product or services. Get creative. We’ve helped clients create activities including a card trick. Activities are tactile, interactive and fun. For card tricks, oversized cards can and should include vivid graphics and text for your product or services. Include text regarding your main talking points & watch everyone gather around to see what the “deal” is. Yes – find ways to make your offerings available to touch whenever possible. Last but never least is taste. If you feed them, they will come. Yes, many times attendees will just stop by to get whatever food treat you might be offering. Remember, with a well-trained and engaging tradeshow staff a conversation can be started to share more information about your product of services, especially if you think outside the box and do more than a bowl of candy. Consider fruit labeled with your branding on a decal, full color custom imprinted lollipops or chocolates or an imprinted coffee mug that you can fill right there on the spot. Which brings us to the next point….

Develop a memory and never let them leave empty handed. Halt an otherwise passing zombie by appealing to their ever-present self-interest. Give them a well intentioned, cool, fun, colorful, useful, thoughtful and appropriately imprinted promotional item that will appeal to their particular needs. This is your chance to get them talking about what they are looking for before they stash their swag into a bag and stagger on.

Last yet of utmost importance: Don’t be a ZOMBIE – Genuine interest along with a positive attitude by your staff will stop even the most hardened zombie heart. Remember to smile and engage with those attendees walking the dreaded zombie zone in the aisles of the show. We’ve all been on the other side of the booth and walked a show ourselves. It’s hard work. So it’s up to you and your staff to make it new and fresh.

Making Your Budget Work

You can achieve a uniform look without breaking the bank. By factoring in your budget, the number of employees, and turnover rate, you can determine what is right for your bottom line.

TIGHT BUDGET

Option 1: Require your employees to wear shirts and pants in colors of your choice; Example: a White shirt and Black pants. Purchase aprons with your logo embroidered on the front. Employees leave the aprons at work and you throw them in the washer at the end of the day. Even if you choose to give employees the aprons, the loss will be minimal on such an inexpensive option. If your business is slightly more formal, opt for a solid-color necktie or scarf and add embroidery.

Option 2: Only outfit the front-of-the-house employees since they have daily, face-to-face interaction with customers.

A BUDGET WITH WIGGLE ROOM

Option 1: Buy basic polos or button-up shirts in your company’s color. Add your logo and/or the employees’ names. Limit the quantity you hand out and require them to pay for any additional. Just don’t expect shirts to last indefinitely after normal, repeated wear and washing. The condition of the clothing reflects on your company’s image, so providing refresher shirts is a boost for the brand and your employees.
Option 2: With the expansion of your budget you can choose a shirt with nicer fabric and added construction details. If that isn’t important to you, add pants to coordinate with the existing shirt. This allows for a more concise look because it eliminates the variation in color between pants bought at Store A vs. Store B. If you do business in a cooler climate or consider the cold temperatures of many office buildings, a sweater is a nice add-on.

BUSINESS-IS-BOOMING BUDGET

Choose an assortment of clothing that creates your uniform look. An example: 2 blazers, 3 sweaters, 4 shirts, 3 pants, 2 skirts, 1 dress, 2 ties, and 2 scarves. The objective is to select an assortment with a variety of styling options, suitable for the job function, as well as a range of body types and with colors that either match or complement one another. Give each employee a clothing allowance and let them mix and match from the choices to suit their tastes. Their allowance isn’t enough to purchase everything, but it gives them a certain amount of ownership over their uniform and they can accommodate their personal preferences. Add to the spending allowance as your business grows or for a holiday incentive.

Be realistic with your uniform budget. Your current state-of-business may not allow you to dress an employee head-to-toe, but as business grows so can the uniform options. Just remember, whatever the budget, uniforms are worth the investment.

Stay tuned for “Corporate vs. Casual.”
